Born and raised in Queens, New York, Shanté exploded onto the hip-hop scene at just 14 years old with her iconic diss track, “Roxanne’s Revenge,” a response to U.T.F.O.’s “Roxanne, Roxanne.”
This track sparked the famous “Roxanne Wars,” making her a pioneer of battle rap and one of the first women to gain major attention in hip-hop. She later joined the Juice Crew, a legendary collective that included artists like Big Daddy Kane and Marley Marl.
Shanté paved the way for future female rappers with her sharp rhymes, confidence, and fearless approach to a male-dominated industry.
Today, Shanté continues to shape the culture. She mentors up-and-coming artists and hosts her own show on SiriusXM’s Rock The Bells Radio.
Her story also lives on in the Netflix film Roxanne Roxanne, which dives into her rise in the hip-hop world.
This award is long overdue and a testament to the lasting influence of a true hip-hop trailblazer.
