Following sports journalist Grant Wahl‘s death last week, his brother Eric Wahl suggested there was foul play. But he has since backed down on the claim.
Eric spoke with the New York Post Tuesday and says he regrets suggesting someone killed his brother, who was covering Friday’s World Cup game in Qatar.
Grant, 49, had complained about suffering from a “death rattle cough” as a result of bronchitis the day before he collapsed while covering the match between Argentina and Netherlands.
Eric said he was “in shock” when he posted his video on social media saying there may have been foul play surrounding his brother’s death.
“I regret the video,” Wahl said. “I was in shock, and I just had limited information to go on. “I’m especially sorry to any people in the Muslim world that I offended. It was never my intention.”
He suspected foul play might have been involved because his brother often spoke against the Qatari government and had received death threats after he wore a rainbow shirt to a match.
Eric posted on Twitter that his family will reveal Grant’s cause of death soon.
“I no longer suspect foul play,” Eric continued, adding that “it seems possible Grant experienced a pulmonary embolism.”
