A video has emerged from an Ohio prison that shows a white inmate stabbing four Black prisoners who were handcuffed to a table allegedly by security guards.
The Associated Press obtained the video which was taken from inside the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville, one of Ohio’s most secure prisons. Months after the initial knife attack, security concerns were raised when the same prisoner was allegedly involved in a knife attack that left another guard severely injured and hospitalized for months.
One of the four inmates, Shamieke Pugh, was a victim of the first attack on June 4, 2017. “He was trying to kill us, for sure,” said Pugh, who has since been released from prison and recovering from multiple stab wounds in his arm, chest and back. During a recreational period, the four prisoners were playing a game of cards. Pugh, 28, says he believes the attack was set up by guards. However, the guards’ union and the prosecutor who brought charges against the attacker denied the claims, reports Fox 8.
In a police report, Reinke “stated that he just felt like killing someone.” The following day authorities decided against prosecuting him because he is already serving a life sentence. Eight months later, Reinke and a second inmate were accused of assaulting guard Matthew Matthias in the prison infirmary. Matthias was stabbed 32 times. A prosecutor then charged Reinke with both attacks. Reinke pleaded not guilty.
Authorities have yet to release information on how Reinke was able to slip out of his handcuffs and smuggle two shanks out of his cell. Lucasville ended the practice of shackling multiple inmates seated at a table after the incident, according to the union that represents Ohio’s correctional officers. Reinke is now imprisoned in the state’s supermax, a high-security prison in Youngstown, along with the other inmate. No guards were disciplined.
