Another Charles Dickens works will be depicted from the same team behind FX and the BBC’s ‘A Christmas Carol,’ according to The Hollywood Reporter.
FX, which is owned by Disney, and the BBC have Steven Knight, who previously worked on Peaky Blinders and FX’s Taboo, writing and executively producing a six-part limited series acquired from Dickens’ Great Expectations.
Executive producers Ridley Scott and Tom Hardy of FX’s A Christmas Carol will return for Great Expectations. The three-part series, A Christmas Carol, originally aired last December, starring Guy Pearce as Ebenezer Scrooge. According to FX, around 10 million people watched the miniseries across all platforms.
“FX is honored to begin the next chapter of collaboration with Steven Knight, Ridley Scott, Tom Hardy, and their teams as they reunite for this modern adaption of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations,” stated FX Entertainment president Eric Schrier. “Their inaugural Dickens adaptation, A Christmas Carol, was a great success both creatively and commercially. We want to thank our partners at the BBC, Scott Free, and Hardy Son & Baker for their support and can’t wait to get to work on this project.”
Charlotte Moore, director of BBC content, added, “Great Expectations is the second in Steven Knight’s series of Dickens adaptations and the perfect choice given its timely and personal narrative. His original take on one of Britain’s most-loved classics will make it must-see drama for a whole new generation.”
‘Great Expectations’ is a classic story based upon a character named Pip, an orphan who is trained to become a blacksmith that becomes intertwined with an eccentric woman named Miss Havisham and her family.
“Adapting Dickens’ work is a delight,” said Knight. “I chose Great Expectations as the next work to bring to the screen not just because of the timeless characters, but also because of the very timely story. A story of class mobility and class intransigence told through an intensely emotional and personal first-person narrative. As the son of a blacksmith myself, Pip’s journey from the forge into society is a very special one to me.”
Knight will executive produce alongside Scott, Hardy, Dean Baker, David W. Zucker, Kate Crowe, and Mona Qureshi for the BBC, who were all involved in A Christmas Carol. Marina Brackenbury is also apart of the project as a co-EP. The show is brought forth by FX Productions in association with the BBC, Scott Free, and Hardy Son & Baker.
