San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich was hospitalized earlier this week after a medical incident at a restaurant, but he is now back home and “doing fine,” according to a report from ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The 76-year-old coach, who is the NBA’s all-time winningest coach, was reportedly placed on a stretcher and taken to the hospital Tuesday night. While the specific cause hasn’t been disclosed, officials said it was a non-life-threatening issue, and sources told TMZ that Popovich was alert when he entered the ambulance.
This marks the second health scare for Popovich in recent months. Back in November, the Spurs announced he had suffered a mild stroke, which caused him to step away from coaching duties for the remainder of the season. In February, Popovich confirmed he would not return to the bench this season but said he was focused on recovery and hopeful for a return in the future.
“I will continue to focus on my health with the hope that I can return to coaching in the future,” Popovich said in a statement at the time.
The Hall of Fame coach has led the Spurs since 1996 and has won five NBA championships. He signed a five-year extension with the team in 2023, but his long-term future remains uncertain as he prioritizes his health.
