A few weeks ago we posted about Halle Berry taking her baby daddy Gabriel Aubry to court for allegedly dying and straightening their daughter Nahla’s hair in an attempt to make her appear more white. Now Halle Berry has proof and it turns out she’s not crazy.
On June 28, 2014 Halle submitted to court Nahla’s hair brush with strands of the 6 year old’s hair. The court submitted the sample to a forensic consulting lab who analyzed the hair and concluded there was evidence it was chemically treated. The lab also concluded that the repeated use of chemicals on Nahla’s hair has caused extensive damage.
This is actually disgusting. Put aside the race thing, but this has to be terrible for a young girl’s self esteem. To show her that she is not beautiful as-is and she’s only 6 years old? Why is it necessary to bleach and straighten a four year old’s hair. Regardless of what you think about Halle Berry and her “sanity”, she makes a great point. This is ridiculous.
In my opinion, those comparing this to black mothers relaxing a child’s hair are off base. Most mothers that I’ve encountered, relax their daughter’s hair to make it easier to comb. If they wanted their daughter’s to appear more European, they would sew tracks into the child’s hair or dye it. A relaxer for manageability is not the same thing. My mom put a relaxer in my hair around the age of 6 or so to make it easier to comb. My younger sister has never had a relaxer in her hair in life.
Thankfully the judge has ordered both Gabriel and Halle to leave Nahla’s hair alone.
