Handcuffed Inmate At Rikers Island Steals Bus Full Of Prisoners

Things are so out of control at New York’s Rikers Island Jail Complex that a handcuffed inmate stole a bus with prisoners on board and crashed it into a wall.

The 29-year-old inmate identified as Abubakar Sanuwo was one of at least six prisoners left alone on the bus at about 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Sanuwo reportedly jumped into the driver’s seat and plowed the bus right into the Anna M. Kross Center wall.

According to The New York Post, two correction officers haphazardly left the bus running when they got off to get paperwork, leaving the prisoners unattended for 10 minutes.

Sanuwo was housed at the facility on burglary and robbery charges and was reportedly front cuffed on the bus while the prisoners waited for the officers to return. Reports claim some of the other prisoners on the bus were known members of the Bloods and Crips gangs.

While an investigation into this incident is underway, the passengers’ injuries are not immediately apparent.  The Transportation Division is also assessing the bus for damages.
