Warner Bros. Discovery is looking to close a deal that would turn the Harry Potter franchise into TV series.
According to Bloomberg, each season would be based on one book from J.K. Rowling’s bestselling seven-novel saga that ran from 1997’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone through 2007’s Deathly Hallows.
Warner CEO David Zaslav and HBO head Casey Bloys say they’re “working to convince Rowling to produce,” however, she “will not run the show day to day or serve as its primary creator.”
The company said that “[Warner Bros.] is hoping the series can be one cornerstone of a new streaming strategy that will be announced next week.”
The news comes almost two years after it was announced that HBO Max and Warner Bros were in the development stages and looking for new writers.
It’s been nearly 12 years since the theatre release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which brought in more than $1 billion at the box office. In total, the HP franchise has brought in over $8 billion.
