Disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein faces two counts of indecent assault in the U.K.
The new charges stem from two incidents that took place in July and August 1996. The victim, whose name is being withheld, is now in her 50’s. Though the details regarding what Weinstein did to her have not been publicly disclosed, the Crown Prosecution Service said that evidence obtained by London’s Metropolitan Police was enough to allow charges against Weinstein.
Weinstein is currently serving a 23-year sentence in prison for raping and assaulting multiple women. He is jailed in California and is awaiting trial for separate sex crime charges in Los Angeles. Weinstein must travel to a police station in either England or Wales to be formally charged in his new case. It is unclear when and if that will happen, but since Britain does not have a statute of limitation on rape or sexual assault, Weinstein can face justice at any point in the future.
The now 70-year-old was a powerful force in the film industry until 2017, when The New York Times reported sexual assault allegations that spanned almost 30 years. Many women came forward with accusations against Weinstein, ranging from groping to rape. Some victims spent years silent about their assaults for fear of retaliation or career ruin.
