Insecure fans will be happy to know HBO has announced the renewal of the hit comedy series for a fifth season. This comes after the first three episodes of the shows fourth season, which premiered April 12 on the premium channel.
Leading star, Issa Rae created the hit show with Larry Wilmore, which is, in part, centered around her web show “Awkward Black Girl.” She is joined by castmates Yvonne Orji, Jay Ellis, Natasha Rothwell, Amanda Seales, and Alexander Hodge.
Rae is also the executive producer alongside Penny, Melina Matsoukas, Michael Rotenberg, Dave Becky, Jonathan Berry, Amy Aniobi, and Jim Kleverweis.
According to Hollywood Reporter, The renewal further cements ties between Rae and HBO. In addition to Insecure, Rae is an executive producer of A Black Lady Sketch Show, which has been renewed for a second season and is developing a half-hour series about pro wrestling for HBO called Tre Cnt with Dwayne Johnson. She’s also set to star in and exec produce (alongside Laura Dern) The Dolls, a limited series about riots over Cabbage Patch dolls in the early 1980s.
“We’re thrilled that Issa, Prentice [Penny], and the whole Insecure team will be getting back together for the fifth season,” said HBO programming executive VP Amy Gravitt. “As we laugh and cringe with recognition, their stories make us all feel a little less alone in the world.”
The show has received numerous award wins and nominations throughout its run. Included in that are an Emmy nomination and two Golden Globe nominations for Rae in the lead actress in a comedy category. Not surprising seeing that the show averages a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
