HBO has ordered a pilot for a new scripted drama based on Jeff Pearlman’s non-fiction book “Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s.” The 2014 book recounts in detail all of the drama and action that happened on and off the court.
According to ‘Deadline’, the pilot is set to chronicle the professional and personal lives of the 1980s Lakers, one of sports’ most dominant dynasties, featuring a star-studded team that won five NBA titles and defined its era.
Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road) has signed on for a key role in the series and he is set to play Jerry Buss, a self-made millionaire, and former Lakers majority owner.
The ‘Untitled Showtime Lakers Project’ is set to kick off production next month.
