Health experts say don’t ignore your headaches during the holidays.
The holiday season is a stressful one. Most are preparing to host their families and friends, cook up large portions or meals and deal with the varieties of personalities that come with their loved ones. While it may be the usual thing to expect each year, medical officials warn people to be aware of their stress levels as it may contribute negatively to their health, leaving side effects like headaches and migraines.
“Migraine is one of the most commonly misunderstood, misdiagnosed and mistreated disorders on the planet,” said Dr. Christopher Gottschalk, professor of clinical neurology and director of headache medicine at Yale School of Medicine, USA Today reports. “The thing that causes people to miss the most time in work, relationships and life is migraines.”
At this time, no evidence can prove that the holidays stir up more headaches amongst people. However, health officials want people to be aware so that they can enjoy their holiday joy.
“They may be getting a headache while they’re doing their Thanksgiving preparation and try to wish it away until it’s so bad that they can’t function and then they’re in trouble,” he said. “No one has let them in on the secret that you can treat a migraine if you have the right tools.”
