A tragic incident unfolded in the Prosperity community of Florida, leading to the death of a toddler who was allegedly left in a car overnight by her parents. Kathreen Adams and Christopher McLean were taken into custody by the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office earlier this week, facing charges of child neglect, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Sheriff John Tate addressed the media during a news conference on Wednesday, disclosing the heartbreaking details of the incident. According to investigators, the parents reportedly left the toddler unattended in a car outside their family home for approximately 14 hours while they remained indoors.
“The baby was asleep in the car seat,” Sheriff Tate stated. “They decided to leave the child in the car and went inside and ultimately fell asleep and did not wake up or did not realize that the child was in the car until around 3:41 that afternoon.”
Upon receiving a distress call from the residence, deputies swiftly responded to the scene. First responders discovered the child and immediately initiated life-saving measures. Despite their efforts, the child was pronounced deceased by EMS personnel.
Both parents underwent blood sample testing, and the results are currently pending. During a search warrant executed at their residence, authorities allegedly found methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, indicating the possibility of additional charges. However, the final decision regarding charges will depend on the outcome of the autopsy.
The 4-year-old sibling of the deceased toddler has been placed in the custody of the Department of Children and Families until further notice.
