As many Black classics continue getting reboots, fans are still holding out hope for a “Girlfriends.”
Unfortunately, for viewers of the hit show that ran from 2000 to 2008, the chances of it returning are highly unlikely. In March 2024, one of the sitcom’s stars, Tracee Ellis Ross, revealed “That ship has sailed” during an interview with Vibe. This revelation devastated “Girlfriends fans, who have had the opportunity to binge-watch the series since it arrived on Netflix in 2020.
While we may never get an update on Toni Childs, Maya Wilkes, Joan Clayton, and Lynn Searcy, here’s what we believe the quartet would be up to today if a reboot were to occur.
Maya would own her own publishing company
We all witnessed Maya launch her career as an author with the book “Oh Hell Yes.” Decades later, a reboot would likely showcase the mom of one expanding her literature career. With her charisma, knowledge of the industry, and background in administration as Joan’s former assistant, Maya Wilkes Publishing sounds like the perfect pathway for this vibrant character.
Regarding family life, Maya and Darnell would be navigating parenthood with their son Jabarri now as an adult and life as empty-nesters.
Joan would be a nightclub mogul
As we all remember, Joan left her law career to pursue a profession in the nightlife. Despite her J-Spot lounge facing some growing pains in the beginning, with years passing since the show concluded, a reboot would certainly see Joan finding her groove, even opening additional locations.
The former attorney always longed for a child and a wedding ring, though the career-driven, habitual overthinker may take a playbook from the woman who portrayed her character all these years. Seeing Joan adapting to the quintessential “rich auntie” would be a far cry from her family ambitions.
Lynn would become a world-renowned musician and documentarian
While viewers were introduced to Lynn as the free-spirited, sometimes irresponsible glue holding the “Girlfriends” together, by the final season, Lynn was on a journey of self-discovery. She’d dived into filmmaking and music, appearing to have finally determined a career she’d enjoyed. If we had to guess, the newer rendition of “Girlfriends” would highlight Lynn as a creator, possibly even teaching the art of documentary-making and music to upcoming artists.
Toni would have a new rich husband
Toni was always a fan of the high life. We saw the luxurious gold digger-turned-wife go through a nasty divorce from her husband, Todd Garrett, but not before the two welcomed a daughter, Morgan. At the end of Toni’s storyline, she relocated to New York City after Todd got a new gig there. This seemed to create stability for baby Morgan, though if the characters were to make a comeback, we don’t see Todd and Toni reconciling romantically. Instead, Toni would have likely settled down with a high-rolling Wall Street businessman as she enjoyed the views from her penthouse. With life going well for both ladies, there could even be some resolve between Toni and Joan, who were on sour terms once the show ended.
These storylines may never come to fruition, though lovers of the sitcom can dream.
