A Texas High School student was charged with assault after being ejected from a game for shoving an opposing player to the ground and tackling the quarterback, according to The Monitor.
In a video posted by KRGV Sports, you can see Emmanuel Duron storming back on the field and tackling the referee to the ground. Duron was escorted out of the stadium by police officers.
“I can’t release any information on that and I apologize for that,” said J.J. Lejia, Edinburg coach, told The Monitor. “I hope you understand. I want this moment to be about our program and all the other kids we had on the field tonight.”
Fred Garcia, the referee, did not return to the game after the incident.
This isn’t the first time that Duron has made trouble on the field. During the 2019-2020 soccer season, Duron was suspended for a similar incident.
Friday morning, the school district announced that due to the incident that occurred on the field, the Edinburg High School football team has been removed from the playoffs.
“The district has decided to remove the Edinburg High School football team from the playoffs after an unexpected incident involving a student that occurred during a football game on December 3, 2020,” the Edinburg CISD said in a statement, according to CBS 4 in Texas.
“We extend a sincere apology to the referee and his family. On behalf of the Edinburg CISD Board of Trustees and administration, we apologize to the athletes, staff, and our school community.”
The statement continued, “We will take the appropriate disciplinary action once we understand the facts and circumstances underlining this incident. The district takes these matters very seriously; however, we cannot comment further on a pending investigation.”
According to The Monitor, Duron is being held in county jail while facing an assault charge.
