Mary Hastings, a 63 year old geometry teacher at Ozen High School, has been arrested and charged with assault after her attack on a student was caught on film.
We aren’t sure what exactly prompted the attack, however the bizarre video shows Hastings during her fourth period math class, repeatedly hitting the student after he reportedly asked about a grade. In the video, you can hear her yelling “Because you’re stopping him from graduating, you idiot ass!”, before pushing papers off the desk and slapping him open handed several times. When the child asked “Why you did that?”, Hastings responds by mocking him and repeating back his words.
The video was shared via Twitter on April 8th; the same day authorities arrested and charged Hastings with one count of assault. She was ultimately released on $2500 bond.
A witness of the attack, Atyra Deroune, said in an interview with 12 News that the attack was out of character for the typically “cool teacher”, going on to explain “It was just that particular day.” Other students supported Deroune, giving similar accounts of Hastings’ cool character.
Ozen High has over 1,100 students, of which are 98% minorities, and 81% of which are economically disadvantaged according to the U.S. News and World Report. On greatschools.org (a school information site) Ozen High received three out of five stars, and is described by some people as “One of the worst places I’ve ever been placed”. Others say the school isn’t that bad, and could be better if teachers weren’t so strict.
The school did take immediate action and placed Hastings on administrative lead soon after her arrest. Next steps for the victim, and teacher, have not been released, but stay posted for further developments.
