Authorities said Wednesday that a hiker camping on a ridge in the Superstition Mountains east of Phoenix died after slipping and falling hundreds of feet while snapping a selfie.
According to the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, Richard Jacobson, 21, was found dead after a hiking companion dialed 911 at around 12:45 a.m. on Monday.
An investigation revealed that Jacobson’s body was nearly 700 feet below where the hikers were camping on top of Flatiron near Lost Dutchman State Park.
Sergeant Doug Peoble with Pinal County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue told CBS affiliate KPHO-TV that “Mr. Jacobson went to go take a photograph with himself and the city skyline in the background, and he lost his footing, and he slipped, and he fell.”
According to reports, Jacobson’s body was recovered using an Arizona Department of Public Safety helicopter.
