H&M retail store is progressing to expand its plus-size clothing with help from model/activist Tess Holliday.
On Thursday, H&M revealed they would be increasing the range of sizes for their clothing with extending women’s sizes to 4XL and men’s to 3XL. Additionally, Holliday has been appointed as the brand’s consultant for inclusivity and size diversity.
Following her previous collaboration with the brand, Holliday was motivated to share her thoughts on ways H&M could improve its inclusivity efforts. Holliday recounted a past project with H&M that she was asked to participate in, had clothing that didn’t cater to her size. Her team then suggested that she arrange a meeting with the brand to discuss these concerns.
“I really went into that meeting and I just spoke from my heart,” Holliday said. “[Plus-size shoppers] have a lot of emotion tied to our clothing, and our access to really cute, trendy pieces is limited. After that meeting, I walked away and I thought, ‘Gosh, I really hope that I get to work with them in some capacity so that this doesn’t happen to someone else.'”
During Holliday’s meeting that day, one of the individuals she met with was Donna Dozier Gordon, who serves as H&M’s Head of Inclusion and Diversity. She says that despite the brand’s longstanding commitment to inclusive shopping, Holliday’s appointment as a consultant underscores H&M’s genuine dedication to this goal.
According to Gordon, H&M has been striving to become more inclusive since 2018 by taking a cautious approach to ensure that they get everything right. This effort has resulted in an increased size range for their online offerings. Holliday also expressed a desire for H&M to continue expanding their size range, stating that her ultimate goal would be a size range that goes up to 5XL.
