If you haven’t noticed, it’s almost that time of the year again to celebrate homecoming season, and if you’re an HBCU grad, that means you should start preparing your outfits now! Whether you are attending day parties or pulling up to tailgates, fashion is just as important as the festivities. HBCU homecomings are a chance to showcase your personal style and express yourself, so it’s key that you step up your wardrobe. Think statement pieces such as bold jewelry and colors, vintage pieces, and eye-catching footwear. From highlighting your school spirit to showing off your fashion sense, this is your chance to make the most of your homecoming and make a lasting impression. Here are some fashion tips to ensure you stand out while fitting in.

Tailgates/Game Day

When it comes to the main attraction, you may be compelled to show your school spirit in a sporty look. But, just because you are repping your school colors doesn’t mean you have to blend in with everyone else. Get creative with layers and textures. You’ll want to make sure you are comfortable but still fashionable. For men, it’s best to go with the relaxed but polished look. A flannel over a simple solid or graphic tee paired with jeans and sneakers is perfect. On the other hand, for ladies, high-waisted jeans, a crop top and a trendy jacket will keep you cute as well as warm, in case the temperature drops later in the evening. Throwing on a pair of boots or sneakers can take the outfit up another notch.

Footwear 

Moving on to shoes. Ladies, as much as you might want to put on those bad a** heels you have at the back of your closet, you may want to reconsider your choices. Think of homecoming as a marathon, not a sprint. For majority of the day, you will spend time walking around or standing on your feet. So, stilettos aren’t ideal. Opt for footwear that is comfortable but also stylish. But, if you must wear heels, it’s best to settle on block heels with minimal height.

Coronation Ball

An HBCU coronation is the most elegant event apart of the homecoming festivities. You’ll want to pull out all of the glamour and class, taking advantage of the opportunity to showcase your formal style. For ladies, this mean breaking out the floor-length gowns or cocktail dresses. Don’t shy away from testing out fabrics like velvet, satin, and sequins. As far as for men, try going for a tailored suit or tuxedo. But, don;t forget to add in your personal style with unique ties, patterned pocket square, or stylish loafers. Don’t forget to accessorize thoughtfully to complete your look.
