House Republicans are facing intense backlash after unveiling their latest budget proposal, which includes a staggering $880 billion cut to Medicaid, a move that could effectively eliminate the program entirely. The proposal also seeks to slash food assistance (SNAP) benefits by 20%, all while advancing a $4.5 trillion tax cut that primarily benefits billionaires.
The proposed cuts to Medicaid are unprecedented in scope. According to legal analyst Aaron Parnas, who posted a video urging people to take action, the number is not random—$880 billion is the total federal Medicaid budget. This means the GOP’s plan could completely dismantle a program that provides health coverage to over 70 million Americans, including low-income families, pregnant women, seniors, and people with disabilities.

“This budget from House Republicans seeks to eliminate Medicaid completely,” Parnas warned. “And they think they can get away with calling it a budget cut? Uh-uh, we’re not gonna let them.”
The proposed budget resolution could be pushed through budget reconciliation, a process that allows Republicans to pass the measure with a simple majority, bypassing the filibuster. If successful, this could leave millions without healthcare coverage.
Joan Alker, Executive Director of the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families, issued a statement condemning the budget’s impact. She noted that the cuts would force states to drastically reduce Medicaid eligibility, limit benefits, and lower provider reimbursement rates, ultimately leaving millions without access to care.
“These cuts will especially harm rural communities where hospitals are already operating on tighter margins,” Alker explained. She also pointed out that the budget committee’s plan to save $880 billion over ten years closely aligns with past proposals to impose a per capita cap on Medicaid funding, ending the federal guarantee that has been in place for 60 years.
As Republicans push to strip away healthcare and food assistance from vulnerable Americans, they are also advocating for a $4.5 trillion tax cut that disproportionately benefits the ultra-wealthy. Critics argue this exposes the party’s priorities: reducing government assistance for those in need while rewarding the richest individuals and corporations.
“Remember when they promised they wouldn’t touch Medicaid? Well, they lied again,” Parnas said in his video.
With budget negotiations underway, opposition to the proposal is growing. Advocates are urging the public to speak out before these cuts become law, emphasizing that the consequences could be catastrophic for millions of Americans.
