Howard University is one of the top HBCU’s in this country’s history, but residents of its surrounding area have been treating the campus like a dog park.
Students and faculty members are outraged by the influx of new residents who flood their campus in Northwest D.C.
Students say neighbors walk their dogs, have picnics and use the campus as an outdoor gym, and generally disrespect the university grounds.
Although it’s a private school, Howard University and parts of its campus are located in the heart of the district. In recent years, as the neighborhoods surrounding the prestigious college have undergone redevelopment, the newer neighbors have shown a severe indifference towards the campus’ historical value.
The beloved yard is a cultural hub for the 152-year-old institution, used by students and members of the historical sororities and fraternities who attend.
University President Dr. Wayne A.I. Frederick issued a statement on Friday, regarding the cultural disconnect between students and residents, the overall point was pretty simple.
“We are aware of the concerns regarding dog walking across campus. Howard is a private institution nestled in the heart of an urban city, and we’ve shared a long-standing positive relationship with our evolving community for more than 150 years, which we look forward to continuing in the future.”
Some residents tried to defend their “right” to use the grounds and even tried to suggest moving its historical campus, an idea that obviously won’t be seriously considered.
Dr. Fredrick addressed all sides as his statement continued.
“We recognize that service animals are a necessary aspect of modern-day life and we will accommodate them as needed. We appreciate pet owners respecting our campus by not bringing pets onto the private areas.”
Hopefully, the new neighbors will grow to understand and respect the legacy of the university.

I am “ole head” who attended Howard in the late 60’s. I guess the “bloc boys” that used to rob and beat us are gone from 4th St near Elm St. Those were the days when fists ruled the turf. now its guns and PRIVILAGE. SMH
