The streets of Minneapolis erupted in chaos Saturday night after federal agents fatally shot 37-year-old ICU nurse Alex Pretti. While the community gathered to demand answers, the grief quickly turned to rage as an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer was reportedly caught mockingly telling protesters “boo hoo” as he walked away from the scene.
According to the Associated Press, the confrontation began shortly after Pretti was killed during a federal operation. A crowd formed near the scene, voicing their anger and calling the agents “cowards” while demanding they leave the neighborhood. The taunt from the officer appeared to ignite an already volatile situation, leading to a night of heavy-handed tactics and street blockades.
Protesters fought back by dragging garbage dumpsters into the road to halt federal vehicles, chanting “ICE out now.” In response, federal agents used batons and deployed flash bangs to disperse the crowd. Multiple individuals were seen being shoved into vehicles and detained by ICE agents as the unrest escalated.
The tragedy and the subsequent behavior of the agents prompted an immediate reaction from local leadership. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called on Donald Trump to “put America first” by removing federal law enforcement from the city, arguing that their presence has only brought more violence and disrespect to the community.
Alex Pretti, identified by his parents as a dedicated healthcare worker, becomes the latest flashpoint in the ongoing tension between Minneapolis and federal authorities. As the city mourns a nurse who spent his life saving others, the image of an agent mocking that loss has left a deep scar on the community.
