Federal immigration agents are under fire after pulling off a controversial operation that looked more like a scene from a reality show than a law enforcement mission.
On Wednesday, Border Patrol agents used a rented Penske box truck to stage a secretive immigration raid outside a Home Depot in Los Angeles’ MacArthur Park area. Video footage shows agents bursting out of the back of the truck—followed by a Fox News crew—and arresting 16 individuals, mostly believed to be day laborers or street vendors from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
The operation was dubbed “Operation Trojan Horse” by agents on the scene, highlighting its deceptive setup. But critics aren’t laughing.
The move came just days after a federal appeals court reinstated a restraining order barring immigration agents from racially profiling or targeting people based on how they look, speak, or where they gather. Legal experts are now questioning whether this surprise raid violated that order. Advocacy groups say the arrests looked like racial targeting, plain and simple.

But the twist? Penske Truck Rental says they had no idea their vehicle was being used by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The company issued a statement saying they strictly prohibit people being transported in the back of their cargo trucks and that they never authorized the vehicle for this type of use. Penske added that they’re reaching out to DHS to reinforce its policies and prevent similar misuse in the future.
Civil rights organizations like the ACLU and CHIRLA blasted the raid, calling it dangerous, inhumane, and a blatant violation of public trust. Local leaders, including LA’s City Attorney, are calling for a full investigation.
The community is left shaken, and the legal implications could be far from over.
