Idris Elba stars in a new urban Western called “Concrete Cowboys,” which is now available starting today on Netflix.
The movie is based on the incredible story of the real Fletcher Street cowboys of Philadelphia, the horses they love, and the challenges they face in the urban area. The story is also based on G. Neri’s award-winning 2011 novel “Ghetto Cowboy.”
According to Variety, Netflix acquired the cowboy tale after it debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival in September of 2020. The movie is packed with black star power which includes, Elba, Caleb McLaughlin, Jharrel Jerome, Lorraine Toussaint, Byron Bowers, and Clifford “Method Man” Smith.
“For a long time, there’s been a real sort of mistelling of history around Black people and horses and cowboys and whatnot,” Elba told Variety in an interview during the film festival.
“I’m hoping that we made this movie and they keep the stables, based on the fact that people fall in love with the story and history and heritage of the stables,” Elba stated.
