An Illinois mother is behind bars after her 10-year-old son was discovered dead in a trashcan inside the garage of her home.
Sushi Staples, 37, is charged with concealment of death, failure to report the death of a child under 13, and obstruction of justice.
Authorities say Zion Staples died in December, and his remains were placed in a garbage can.
TV6 Investigates spoke with a woman, who wished to remain anonymous, that said her tip is what led police to the boy’s body. The source claimed Staples had made strange comments about the child, including that “Christmas would never be the same.”
The source called the Department of Children and Family Services late last month, leading to a welfare check. That’s when police discovered Zion’s body. Staples was arrested shortly after the body was found.
During the investigation, Staples denied having a son and claimed his birth certificate was fraudulent.
Rock Island County Coroner Brian Gustafson said preliminary autopsy results indicate that the boy’s death is suspicious. So far, no one has been charged with the boy’s death.
Sushi Staples is being held in the Rock Island County Jail on a $500,000 bond. She is due back in court on August 15.
