Illinois state senator Kimberly Lightford was carjacked and shots were fired, police say.
Fox News reports that Illinois’ Democratic state Senate Majority leader had her car stolen in a Chicago suburb at around 9:45 p.m. in the 2100 block of South 20th Avenue. The crooks stole her black Mercedes-Benz SUV, Chief of Police Thomas Mills says, Fox News reports.
“This is still an ongoing investigation but I can confirm no shots were fired by the police,” Mills said. “The victim did hear what they believed to be gunfire.”
Police say no one was harmed during the incident. The crooks ended up taking off in Lightford’s car. The thieves are still on the loose as of Wednesday, according to police. They were reportedly driving Lightford’s car when they left the scene, along with a Durango SUV.
“First and foremost, I am thankful that my husband and I are alive and physically unharmed,” Lightford said in a statement, the news outlet reports. “I am trying to process the trauma of what happened. I want to thank everyone who has offered their love and support. I want to especially thank Mayor Katrina Thompson and the Broadview Police Department for their quick and thorough response.”
