Algerian boxer Imane Khelif secured a bronze medal on Saturday, following a victorious match against Hungarian opponent Anna Luca Hamori. Despite controversy surrounding her participation, International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach defended Khelif and fellow competitor Lin Yu-ting, stating that any concerns over their gender identity are “totally unacceptable.”
After her win, Khelif made an emotional declaration, saying, “I want to tell the entire world that I am a female, and I will remain a female.” Draped in the Algerian flag, she dedicated her medal to her country and to the Arab world, passionately shouting, “Long live Algeria!”
During the match, Khelif had strong support from fans who chanted her name and waved Algerian flags. The judges unanimously scored the fight in her favor, with one round scored 10-8. Despite previous remarks from Hamori suggesting doubts about Khelif’s gender, the two athletes appeared cordial post-match.
The debate over Khelif and Yu-ting’s participation was heightened after allegations surfaced that they had failed gender eligibility tests last year. However, Bach emphasized that both athletes have always competed as women and criticized the backlash as “hate speech.”
Khelif, who also competed at the Tokyo Olympics, has faced harsh scrutiny. Her father, Amar Khelif, defended her, stating that these attacks aim to destabilize her but assured that she remains a champion. Khelif’s victory and determination have garnered widespread support, including from Algeria’s youth and sports minister, Abderrahmane Hammad, and the National Black Justice Coalition, which condemned the baseless attacks on her gender identity.
As the controversy continues, Khelif remains focused on her athletic career, undeterred by the negative attention. Her win against Hamori ensures her a place on the podium, marking another significant achievement in her boxing career.
