Two Brazilian influencers, Aline Tamara Moreira de Amorim, 37, and Beatriz Tavares da Silva Faria, 27, tragically drowned after a boat capsized off the coast of São Paulo on September 29, according to local reports.
The accident occurred near a region ominously known as Garganta do Diabo or “Devil’s Throat.” Out of the seven people on board, only five were rescued, with Amorim and Faria later confirmed dead.
According to G1 Globo, the boat’s pilot reported that the two women had declined to wear life jackets, citing that the life vests would interfere with tanning and selfies. The chief police officer of the city, Marcos Alexandre Alfino, revealed that the two women had attended a party on board the boat and reportedly did not know each other before the event. Amorim, a mother to a 17-year-old son, had also posted photos from the boat on social media earlier that day.
The tragedy unfolded as the group was being transported back to shore on a smaller vessel. A sudden wave struck the boat, sending all seven passengers into the water. Survivors recounted a chaotic scene. Vanessa Audrey da Silva, one of the survivors, told International Business Times she quickly secured her life jacket and clung to a rock until rescuers arrived. “There was a moment in the water when no one could see anyone,” she recalled. “I was fighting for my life.”
The boat’s pilot, who remains unidentified, claimed he attempted to rescue as many as he could.
