Instagram CEO Says App Does Not Eavesdrop On Personal Conversations, Gayle King Says “I Don’t Believe You”

It’s common knowledge that you can have a casual conversation with someone (or even talk to yourself out loud) about a product or location, and when you get back on Instagram, the first ad we see is for the exact thing you were just talking about!

Well, according to Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri, the phenomenon is simply “dumb luck,” but “CBS This Morning” host Gayle King says that’s bs because it happens way too often to too many people.

During an interview with “CBS This Morning,” Mosseri said it’s either dumb luck or subconscious thinking when an ad for something a user discusses in a private conversation shows up on their Instagram feed. Mosseri said IG doesn’t look at users’ messages or listen to their microphone.

King wasn’t satisfied with the answers she received. “I don’t believe you. I don’t know how this happens repeatedly,” King said.

“Does it happen to you?” she asked. However, as Mosseri hesitated to answer, she quickly chimed in, saying, “No!” Mosseri replied, “I’m sure…I don’t wanna just say no…I’m sure it’s happened. I can’t think of a good example.” Then nonchalantly says, “I get pretty good ads, though.”
