Instagram is contemplating revamping its “close friends” feature.
For a while, IG users have expressed their grievances with the platform’s impersonal feel, primarily its algorithmic feed. In response, the company has been working on additional ways for users to share content with their friends. As part of these efforts, Instagram is currently experimenting with a feature that allows users to exclusively share feed posts with their “Close Friends” group.
“We’re testing the ability for people in select countries to share feed posts with their Close Friends. We’re always exploring new ways for our community to express themselves and connect on Instagram,” a Meta spokesperson said.
In 2018, Instagram introduced a global feature that allowed users to share Stories exclusively with a select group of “Close Friends.” The following year, the company ventured into group conversations within Instagram’s “Close Friends” circle with an app named Thread (seperate from the social network launched in July). However, Threads was discontinued in 2021 to refocus on enhancing the direct messaging experience.
In December, Instagram introduced “Notes” as a means to share text updates with friends. In recent months, the company has added features to Notes, to enhance the overall experience.
