A ceasefire agreement was reached Wednesday to end 15 months of conflict in the Gaza Strip, announced by President Joe Biden, Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, and Hamas officials. The deal includes the release of hostages held in Gaza and Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, marking a significant step toward de-escalation after a weeklong truce expired on December 1, 2023.

The agreement will take effect Sunday, following extensive negotiations hosted by Qatar. As part of the phased deal, Israeli forces will withdraw to the Gaza border, facilitating the return of displaced Palestinians to their homes and enabling humanitarian aid deliveries. Hospitals and healthcare centers in Gaza will also receive critical rebuilding support.
Hamas will release 33 hostages in exchange for 100 Palestinians serving life sentences. Additionally, Israel will release 1,000 Palestinian prisoners uninvolved in the October 7 attacks, and some prisoners will be relocated either abroad or to Gaza.
President Biden praised the diplomatic efforts by the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar, calling it a breakthrough for the people of Israel and Gaza. In his remarks, he acknowledged the suffering of civilians on both sides and expressed relief at the prospect of progress.
The deal follows a brutal winter in Gaza, where the war has displaced much of the population and devastated infrastructure. Gaza health officials estimate over 46,000 Palestinian deaths, predominantly civilians, since Israel’s military campaign began after Hamas’s October 7 terrorist attack, which left 1,200 people dead and 250 taken hostage.
The announcement sparked celebrations in Gaza and Israel, though tensions remain. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office emphasized that Hamas conceded on key demands, while Netanyahu prepared to present the deal for Cabinet approval.
Internationally, the ceasefire has garnered mixed reactions. While allies have supported Israel’s actions, there have been growing calls for accountability and humanitarian considerations. Allegations of war crimes on both sides have heightened scrutiny, and international organizations have condemned the human toll of the conflict.
