Issa Rae is teaming up with executive producer, writer, and director Dui Jarrod for a youtube series titled, “King Ester.”
The series will follow the story of Ester, a transgender person navigating the streets of New Orleans a week before Hurricane Katrina. Facing the evacuation order, Ester is forced to make a choice that will impact her future forever. “King Ester” will be the first time the production company steps into the conversation surrounding trans-lives.
Starring Angelica Ross (Pose, Her Story), Janet Hubert (Fresh Prince of Bel-Air), and Rowin Amone, the series is set to air October 17, on Issa Rae’s YouTube channel. “King Ester” seeks to affirm joy, potential, and humanity, including trans voices both in front and behind the camera.
“I’ve been extremely conscious about who I align myself with. I love “King Ester,” and my investment in telling the story meant I wasn’t going to join any platform that didn’t negate the purpose of me creating the series. I feel confident the Issa Rae Productions’ audience is the perfect fit, and will allow ‘Ester’ into their hearts with empathy and love,” Dui Jarrod stated in a press release.
Production also includes Carlane Robinson, Angelica Ross, Ryan Roberson, and Jonathan Mallow.
