”Insecure” creator and star Issa Rae is busy at work, and apparently, her latest project is the reimagining of a classic film.
According to Hollywood Reporter, #IssaRae is in the early development stages of the reimagining of New Line’s 1996 crime thriller ‘Set It Off,’ which originally starred Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, Vivica A. Fox, and Kimberly Elise.
Not only will Rae be producing the new project, but she will likely be starring in it as well. The actress is set to be producing alongside Montrel McKay, who’s Rae’s partner in crime at Issa Rae Productions. Meanwhile, Syretta Singleton from ‘Black Monday’ and Nina Gloster from ‘Star’ will write the script, according to reports.
The project is still in early development, so it’s unclear whether it will technically be a remake or a reboot.
As you may recall, the original #SetItOff movie followed the lives of four friends, who were tired of barely getting by with their low-paying jobs. The girl-pack conjured up a plan to start robbing banks which started off as a success and ended with an obsessive detective on their trail. In the end, the four started to lose trust in each other as their interests changed, and lives were lost after one of their biggest bank heists.
As for Rae, she is a force to be reckoned with as the star is knocking out projects left and right. Her HBO hit series ‘Insecure’ will return in 2020 for its fourth season, ‘A Black Lady Sketch Show’ premiered last month in which she co-produces, and she is set to star in the upcoming film ‘The Lovebirds.’
