Most people hear, “It’s not you, it’s me” and think it’s just a cop out, cowardly way to break up with someone you don’t like. Oddly enough, I’ve been wanting to break up with friends and men in my life, and REALLY, it’s not them, it’s me.
Have you ever found yourself getting super annoyed by someone? But it’s not something specific that you can point out that annoys you? Or, they aren’t doing anything “wrong” you just don’t want them around? This is the story of my life. I’ve realized it can be my own attitude and my own nerves, and maybe this person is perfectly fine. And once you own your attitude, you can be okay with it.
People always think of break ups as a big, dramatic thing, where you have to have a problem with someone and be all mad, but everything isn’t extra. I’ve learned that I don’t have to like everyone. Maybe I just don’t like your energy, maybe your aura is an ugly color, maybe I just don’t have the energy it takes to be your friend. Live your life with no apologies and know you don’t owe anyone but yourself, anything.
So, the next time you are dealing with your annoying friend or significant other, and you’re trying to work through your attitude with them, don’t fight the feeling. Maybe it IS you. And that’s okay! And if someone tells you it’s them (assuming they aren’t just a douchbag-y person) accept it. You don’t know their life, and it could really be their own issues. Keep an open mind.
