The Los Angeles Lakers may have a chance this season with new coach Byron Scott. The former teammate of Magic Johnson, Jamaal Wilkes, and Kobe Bryant (rookie season 96-97) was announced as the team’s head coach this past Tuesday with a plethora of support from former teammates and coaches alike. Meanwhile, with a less than stellar season behind them, the 53 year old Inglewood, CA native is eager to start winning championships again. Based on the fact that Scott has won 3 championships in the past, has a current record of 416-521, and 13 coaching seasons under his belt it should not be difficult. Scott was chosen out of 6 prospects, and the Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak released the following statement: “I think it was clear, at least it was clear to us, that Byron was always our first choice.” Much speculation has surrounded the idea of Byron Scott coaching his former team-mate Kobe Bryant. Scott didn’t have much to say regarding this issue, but did state that he looks forward to coaching Kobe whom he still refers to as one of the best players in the league. The only regret that Scott mentioned in accepting his new position was that former owner Dr. Jerry Buss was not there to witness the highly anticipated triumph; Dr. Buss passed away in February of 2013. In a statement released in conjunction with the announcement Scott stated, “This organization is all about championships, Period. We don’t look at Western Conference finals, Western Conference championships; we look at [NBA] championships. And we know we have some work ahead of us, but I’m excited, I’m just thrilled to death, I’m eager and just ready to get to work. I know it’s going to be a challenge, but I look forward to it! I love challenges anyway, so this is going to be fun!” Byron is the franchise’s 25th head coach in history. He seems to be in high spirits surrounding his new found position. Based on his own career history, I have no quarrels regarding his plan to take this team back to the top. How do you feel about the new head coach? Comment below with your opinions! xoxo
