Jacksonville Jaguars Cut Tim Tebow

The Jacksonville Jaguars have given Tim Tebow the boot.

Tebow’s brief stint with the Jags lasted only three months and was his latest chance at playing with an NFL team since playing in a preseason game in 2015. He previously spent two seasons with the Denver Broncos after being drafted in the 2010 NFL Draft. Tebow also played briefly with the New York Jets, New England Patriots, and Philadelphia Eagles.

Tebow inked a one-year deal with the Jaguars on May 20th, returning to the NFL as a tight end, previously playing quarterback throughout his college and early pro career. While playing with other teams, the former Heisman Trophy winner was committed to remaining a quarterback. Once his former University of Florida coach, Urban Meyer, became head coach of the Jaguars, he decided to try his luck as a tight end.

He initially looked promising in the new position. However, while playing in the Jaguars’ preseason-opening game against the Cleveland Browns on Saturday, it was clear that he lacked the skill set to perform as a tight end professionally.

“We knew that was an uphill battle for Tim,” Meyer stated. “Players loved him, locker room loved him, but it was the right thing.”

Tebow announced in 2016 that he would be moving from football to professional baseball, despite not playing the sport since his senior year of high school. The New York Mets signed him to a minor-league deal, but after several years, the now 34-year-old announced his retirement from the sport in February.

Following news of his release from the Jacksonville Jaguars, Tebow took to his Twitter to thank the team and express his gratitude for the opportunity to “have pursued a dream.”

Thankful for the highs and even the lows, the opportunities, and the setbacks. I’ve never wanted to make decisions out of fear of failure and I’m grateful for the chance to have pursued a dream…
