Since the NFL season kicked off, it has been a rough ride for Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson. However, during yesterday’s game against Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals, Watson appeared to finally find his rhythm as the Browns threatened to score late in the first half.
Unfortunately, disaster struck on a designed quarterback draw. As Watson planted his foot, the replay showed the devastating moment his Achilles tendon ruptured. Watson immediately went down, screaming in pain. It was a heartbreaking sight for any football fan, as injuries like this often end a player’s season.
The Cleveland Browns have struggled this season, sitting at 1-6 while Watson, earning over $50 million a year, has faced criticism for his performance. Adding to the drama, some Browns fans shockingly cheered when Watson went down—a reaction widely seen as classless. Backup quarterback Jameis Winston took a stand, calling out the fan base for their reaction and offering his support for Watson.
“The way I was raised, I was taught to love no matter the circumstances,” Winston told reporters after the game. “Especially for people who do right by you. I’m very upset by the reaction to a man who’s had the world against him for the past four years. He puts his body and life on the line for this city every single day.”
Winston continued, “Regardless of your perception of him, or what you think should have happened, he committed every day to being the best for this team. The way I was raised, I would never kick a man when he’s down. I’d be the one to lift him up.”
Winston’s words resonated with many, and this morning the Browns officially announced that Watson’s injury is season-ending. With backup quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson also injured late in Sunday’s game, Winston could see some playing time in the coming weeks.
