The second part of Janet Jackson’s documentary aired on Saturday on A&E and Lifetime. The singer reveals details about her famous brother and the infamous Super Bowl halftime performance in the episode.
The first hour of Janet Jackson saw the singer discuss her relationship with her late brother, Michael. She also opened up about the allegations against him regarding an inappropriate relationship with a 13-year-old boy.
According to Jackson, once the allegation went public, it affected her, too. She was denied a Coca-Cola endorsement over the scandal, even though it had nothing to do with her.Â
“My brother would never do something like that, but I’m still guilty by association. That’s what they call it, right?” she said. “He didn’t have that in him.”
Jackson also understands that settling with the teen’s family makes him appear guilty. She denies that was the case. Instead, she said Michael just wanted the controversy to go away.
“He just wanted it to go away, but (the payout) looks like you’re guilty,” Jackson explained.
The Grammy award-winning singer touched on her 2004 Super Bowl halftime with Justin Timberlake when her breast was exposed and the fallout behind it in the second half. However, she wants people to know that she and Timberlake are good friends, and the whole thing was overblown.
”Justin and I are very good friends, and we will always be very good friends,” Jackson revealed. “We spoke just a few days ago. He and I have moved on, and it’s time for everyone else to do the same.”
Jackson also opened up about how the incident affected her professionally. Shortly after it happened, she was disinvited to the Grammy Awards. As a result, Jermain Dupri, who was dating Jackson at the time and appeared in the documentary, resigned from the Grammys’ board.
“I felt like they were disrespectful to Janet, and I resigned at that point,” Dupri said.
In the end, Jackson defended Timberlake and said it was just an accident.
“Honestly, this whole thing was blown way out of proportion. Of course, it was an accident,” Jackson said. “That should not have happened, but everyone is looking for someone to blame, and that’s got to stop.”
