In an interview with InStyle, actor Jason Momoa revealed his family struggled to pay their bills after losing his Game of Thrones job.

Momoa played Khal Drago in the hit HBO TV show, but his character was killed off at the end of Season One before the show became a hit. Following the show, he had trouble finding work for several years.

While out of work, he revealed that he and his wife, Lisa Bonet, struggled to pay the bills. The couple shares two children, adding more pressure at home.

“I mean, we were starving after Game of Thrones,” he told the publication. “I couldn’t get work. It’s very challenging when you have babies, and you’re completely in debt.”

Things began to turn around in 2016 when Momoa was tapped to play Aquaman in Justice League. Just two years later, he headlined the hit movie of the same name.

Now he’s booked until about 2024. He’s currently filming the second season of the Apple TV+ series, See, and Dune is set to release next year. He told the publication that he couldn’t believe his name was up there with acting greats when he saw the Dune trailer this summer. The film’s release was pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“It was ‘Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem,’ and I’m just like, ‘Oh my god. I can’t believe my name was with those names,’” he said of seeing the trailer. “I feel like I’m still a kid, freaking out.”
