Jay-Z’s mother, Gloria Carter, recently got married to her long-term partner in a star-studded wedding ceremony.
On Sunday, Mama Hov exchanged vows with Roxanne Wilshire.
Among the celebration were JAY-Z and daughter-in-law Beyoncé and grand-daughter Blu Ivy, along with other stars like Kelly Rowland, Tyler Perry, Good Morning America host Robin Roberts and Corey Gamble.
“Mama had four kids, but she’s a lesbian/Had to pretend so long that she’s a thespian/Had to hide in the closet, so she medicate/Society shame and the pain was too much to take,” he rapped in the song. “Cried tears of joy when you fell in love/Don’t matter to me if it’s a him or her/I just wanna see you smile through all the hate/Marie Antoinette, baby, let ’em eat cake.”
In 2018, the song was the recipient of a Special Recognition award at the 29th GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) Media Awards. Mama Cater accepted the award on her son’s behalf and delivered a touching speech.
“Here I am. I’m loving. I’m respectful. I’m productive and I’m a human being who has a right to love who I love,” she said in closing. “So everybody — just smile, be free. Thank you and God bless.”
Congratulations, Gloria and Roxanne.
