Jaylen Brown did not take kindly to Grant Hill’s conspiracy theory comments on Sunday before Team USA’s matchup. Brown took to Twitter after he was not selected for the team, with his teammate guard Derrick White being chosen instead to replace Kawhi Leonard. The absence of the Eastern Conference and NBA Finals MVP from the team is intriguing. Team USA has always been viewed as having a tough selection process and a unique approach to choosing its roster.
When Team USA managing director Grant Hill joined the Dan Patrick show, he addressed the criticisms from Brown and NBA fans about the NBA Champion not making the roster.
“I spoke to (Brown’s) agent. I don’t know if that was before or after things went out on Twitter,” Hill said. “But yeah, I think this idea that there’s a conspiracy theory—I always love a good conspiracy theory—but it was truly a basketball decision, and these are tough decisions. Having gone through this with the FIBA competition, you want to find the right balance and the right pieces on the court that we needed.”
Hill’s comments are ironic because, in comparison, Jaylen Brown seems to be a better version of Derrick White on both sides of the court. Brown called out Hill for downplaying and accusing him of being a conspiracy theorist.
“Grant Hill calling me a conspiracy theorist is disappointing. I’ve been a VP (of the NBPA) since I was 21 years old,” Brown tweeted after Hill’s interview.

Brown was elected as the youngest Vice President of the players’ association, is very passionate, and is a leader in social issues. He leads by example, and the three-time All-Star has likely dreamed about representing the red, white, and blue. Although this might not be his last opportunity, it was an elite chance for Brown to make the team, especially considering his teammate Jayson Tatum did not play a single minute.
