Immigration has become one of the most debated topics leading up to the 2024 election, with Vice President hopeful JD Vance stirring the pot with some eyebrow-raising claims about Haitian immigrants in Ohio. Vance has taken to social media with allegations that Haitian migrants are behind a series of strange crimes in his home state, from stealing and eating cats to a rise in diseases like tuberculosis and HIV.
In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Vance wrote, “Residents in Springfield have been telling my office their pets are being abducted by Haitian migrants.” He further alleged, “A child was murdered by a migrant, and local health services are overwhelmed with rising cases of TB and HIV.”
But here’s the thing—local officials and health experts are pushing back hard on these claims.
One event that may have fueled the rumors was an incident in Canton, Ohio, where a 27-year-old woman was arrested in August for killing and possibly eating a cat in front of witnesses. This disturbing act happened 170 miles away from Springfield, where Vance made his claims. Despite initial online buzz, it was later confirmed that the woman involved was not a Haitian immigrant but a local Ohio resident.
However, despite these facts, several prominent Republicans, including Senator Ted Cruz, have echoed Vance’s claims, keeping the false rumors alive in conservative circles.
Springfield City Manager Bryan Heck came forward to debunk the allegations, saying, “There have been no credible reports of immigrants harming pets or engaging in illegal activities.” Heck emphasized that there’s no evidence to support Vance’s accusations about Haitian immigrants causing chaos in the city.
His statement also addressed other viral rumors: “There are no verified instances of squatting or littering by immigrants in Springfield, nor have there been any reports of traffic disruptions caused by them.”
