Jeffree Star has gone viral again; this time, it’s for commenting on non-binary pronouns.
During a Valentine’s Day “Bussin’ With The Boys” podcast episode, the star told NFL player Taylor Lewan “You’re not ‘they’ and ‘them,'” he said, “You’re trans, you’re male, or you’re female.”
The openly gay influencer said that pronoun culture emerged due to people being “bored” during the pandemic.
“‘They’ and ‘them’ and all that extra s–t that we added during the pandemic. Because everyone is so bored in their f–king houses, they just started to make up more s–t,” he said.
Star added, “And people get so mad when I say that. How are you a ‘they?’ What the f–k does that mean?”
“It’s stupid, is what it is. But you need someone like me that looks like me to say it. Because if you say it, it turns into, ‘you’re homophobic, you hate trans people, you hate gays,’ and it’s just how you feel,” Star said. “You don’t hate anyone, you just think it’s stupid.”
“That’s where the conservatives like me, cause I’m just real,” he added.
Ultimately, Lewan agreed with Star, saying that he “can sit here comfortably on camera and say that I truly just don’t understand” the pronoun phenomenon, to which Star replied, “And that’s okay. It doesn’t mean you’re hateful.”
Following the video, Star received backlash for his remarks, which had raised many questions because, in previous videos, he appeared to promote gender ambiguity when he said that “gender ambiguity can be found in makeup, fashion, sexual identity, gender identity, anything.”
After being attacked for his comments, Star addressed the backlash in his Instagram Story, saying, “What we’re not going to do is misconstrue what I said. To anyone making it seem like I said nonbinary people don’t exist, I never said that.”
