The 2026 Grammy Awards were arguably the most political in the show’s history, with massive names like Bad Bunny and Billie Eilish using their acceptance speeches to slam ICE and immigration policies. But while the “ICE Out” pins were everywhere on the red carpet, one of the night’s biggest winners was noticeably quiet on the subject.
Jelly Roll, who took home Best Contemporary Country Album for Beautifully Broken, admitted that he’s simply not the guy to ask for a political take.
When pressed about the hot-button issues of the night, the Tennessee native didn’t offer a canned PR response. Instead, he got incredibly real about his upbringing and why he doesn’t feel qualified to weigh in. “I can tell you that people shouldn’t care to hear my opinion, man. You know, I’m a dumb redneck. I haven’t watched enough,” he told reporters. He explained that his recent lifestyle has made it nearly impossible to keep up with the news cycle, saying, “I didn’t have a phone for 18 months. I’ve had one for four months and don’t have social media.”
Jelly Roll’s reluctance to speak out isn’t about being “aloof,” but rather a byproduct of a life spent in survival mode. He shared that growing up in a household plagued by addiction meant that world events were the last thing on his mind. “And I grew up in an insane pandemonium like I didn’t know politics were fucking real until my mid-20s in jail,” he admitted. “When you grow up in a drug addict household, do you think we have common calls about what’s happening in world politics? Like, we’re just trying to find a way to survive, man.”
While he isn’t ready to jump into the middle of the ICE debate just yet, the singer hinted that he is starting to process his thoughts on the current state of the country. Despite his self-deprecating “redneck” label, he made it clear that he isn’t ignoring the world forever. “I hate to be the artist that’s static aloof, but I just become so disconnected from what’s happening,” he said, before adding a cryptic promise for the future: “And I have a lot to say about it, so I look forward.”
