Since his album, “Beautifully Broken,” reached No. 1 on the charts, country singer Jelly Roll has been riding a wave of success. But, even in his victory, the singer has found time to voice his frustrations about the “slimy” side of the music industry.

During a recent interview on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Jelly Roll shared his experience dealing with the shady and manipulative side of the industry. The Nashville native revealed that during the final hours before the weekly sales count closed, another artist who wasn’t projected to have specific numbers experienced a significant spike in sales that was suspiciously close to Jelly Roll’s. Without naming the individual, Jelly Roll was in disbelief over how quickly the numbers changed.
“There was an artist that looked like HITS Daily Double projected they wasn’t even gonna be within 50-60,000 albums of me and Rod Wave,” Jelly Roll said. “And then Thursday night, before the Friday count ends, 40,000 albums [from a] third-party aggregated site.”
Fortunately, the attempt to inflate the numbers was unsuccessful. The organization responsible for tracking and verifying music sales, Luminate, rejected the late entries, which allowed Jelly Roll to secure the top spot.
He continued, “And you’re just like, ‘Yo, that’s just slimy.’ I used a great term. Now, Luminate who is in charge of counting record sales, rejected these sales, which is how I ended up with the No. 1 album.”
Despite not mentioning anyone’s name, some speculated that the singer was referring to Charli XCX, who debuted two albums the same week. Nonetheless, Rod Wave’s “Last Lap” album scored the second spot although it racked up higher streaming numbers.
Mind you Jelly Roll was donating 100% of the profits from the album to mental health charities and Charli XCX still tried to rob him. She is truly the rotten part of the music that y’all pretend others are. https://t.co/Lo6UF0FplP pic.twitter.com/lWZNcz7fTo
