Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez have officially ended their relationship.
The formerly engaged couple revealed their split on the Today Show this morning after attempting to repair their relationship following breakup rumors last month. Lopez and Rodriguez began dating in 2017 and became engaged in March 2019.
The two decided to release a joint statement that read: “We have realized we are better as friends and look forward to remaining so. We will continue to work together and support each other on our shared businesses and projects. We wish the best for each other, and one another’s children. Out of respect for them, the only other comment we have to say is thank you to everyone who has sent kind words and support.”
The news comes just days after Lopez ignited breakup speculation by posting pictures of herself without her engagement ring on Instagram.
In March, the first breakup reports were issued, and the couple replied to them the next morning. In a joint statement, they said, “All the reports are inaccurate.” They said, “We are working through some things.”
Rodriguez flew out to Lopez in the Dominican Republic, where he was filming Shotgun Wedding, to try to mend their relationship in person.
A friend told PEOPLE that “She’s been contemplating breaking up with Alex for six months,” just days after the first breakup news was released.
On March 12, a different source told E! that the singer’s friends were not Rodriguez’s fans because of his previous cheating scandals.
“Jennifer’s friends for a long time had warned her that A.Rod was not a good guy and that he was using her to clean up his tarnished image after his many scandals,” the source said. “For years, Jennifer did not listen to the warnings, but now she believes them.”
