It’s no secret that the Dallas Cowboys have struggled to negotiate effectively—whether it’s about timing or execution. This week at the NFL Owners Meetings in Florida, Jerry Jones made it clear that not much has changed.
Star defensive player Micah Parsons is entering the final year of his rookie deal. As one of the most dominant defensive forces in the league, Parsons has positioned himself to be compensated like a true franchise cornerstone. What could that number look like? It might be historic—potentially making the Pennsylvania native the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.
When Jerry Jones was asked about the team’s negotiations with Parsons, he claimed things were progressing. However, Jones may have made a critical misstep by downplaying the role of Parsons’ agent, David Mulugheta, a highly respected figure in player representation.
“The agent is not a factor here,” Jones told reporters. “Or something to worry about. I don’t know his name… The agent has nothing to do with what we do when we get on the football field as a team—Micah does. To the degree I’m involved, I do.”
That comment didn’t sit well with Parsons, who took to social media to defend his agent and make it clear that Mulugheta will be at the center of any contract talks.
“Facts!! David is the best and I will not be doing any deal without @DavidMulugheta involved,” Parsons posted on X (formerly Twitter). “Like anyone with good sense, I hired experts for a reason. There is no one I trust more when it comes to negotiating contracts than David!”
He added: “There will be no backdoors in this contract negotiation.”
Parsons is represented by one of the most well-regarded agents in the league, and Jones’ dismissive comment could potentially complicate negotiations. There’s still plenty of time left in the offseason, and it’ll be interesting to see if Jerry Jones walks back his comments—or chooses to stay silent moving forward.
Either way, all eyes will remain on Dallas and how they handle the future of one of the league’s brightest stars.
