Jerry Jones is reportedly determined to get Roger Goodell out of the NFL commissioner’s seat. Last month it was reported that Goodell’s contract extension as commissioner was on ice due to the looming national anthem controversy. Since then, several owners have joined forces in an attempt to “hijack” the commissioner’s extension, in a plot led by the Dallas Cowboys’ owner.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Now, Jones is reportedly threatening legal action against the owners of the NFL’s Compensation Committee if Goodell’s extension is approved, according to Peter King of the MMQB.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“There is little question in my mind that Jerry Jones wants to overthrow Roger Goodell,” an ownership source told King, referencing the litigation Jones threatened to file.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Jones’ threats come after the suspension of the Cowboys’ star running back Ezekiel Elliott. Elliot had been fighting against the league concerning the suspension for weeks, until this past Thursday. Many believed Goodell was trying to make an example out of Elliott after failing to properly address domestic violence in the league. But even after the league’s investigators concluded that the accuser was lying about the incident, Goodell moved forward with enforcing a six-game suspension.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Jones has disagreed with the punishment and expressed frustration, according to King, about Goodell coming “down hard on players even when the overwhelming evidence did not exist” for suspensions in the past. Jones, as well as other owners, were annoyed about Goodell’s mishandling of the national anthem controversy as well, wondering “Why didn’t this commissioner have this juice to make the approximately 16 current players who have not been standing for the national anthem – only one percent of the league’s active players, but enough to drive fans and major sponsors batty-end their demonstrations?”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In addition to all of that, Jones just thinks Goodell’s new contract is way too high, as Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen revealed that the commissioner’s new deal could be worth up to $50 million per year with lifetime use of a private jet and health insurance for his family. One owner said that price is “offensive” and “unseemly.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
However, another owner told the reporters that the commissioner is “not going to resign; he’s not going to take a pay cut. He can stand to show some humility, but he won’t listen to staff.”
