Rev. Jesse Jackson Hospitalized in Chicago for Rare Brain Disease

Jesse Jackson, a towering figure in the American civil rights movement and a global voice for justice and equality, has died at the age of 84. Jackson’s family announced he died peacefully on February 17, 2026, at his home in Chicago, surrounded by loved ones.

Born Jesse Louis Jackson on October 8, 1941, in segregated Greenville, South Carolina, Jackson’s early experiences with racism shaped a life devoted to activism. As a young student, he helped lead sit-ins challenging segregation, signaling the beginning of decades spent confronting injustice head-on.

Jackson rose to national prominence in the 1960s as a close associate of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and played key roles in major civil rights campaigns. After King’s assassination, he continued the movement’s momentum by founding Operation PUSH and later the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, organizations focused on economic empowerment, voter registration, and corporate accountability.

His commanding presence and powerful oratory made him a national political figure. In 1984 and 1988, he ran for the Democratic presidential nomination, breaking barriers and expanding the possibilities of Black political leadership in the United States. His campaigns built broad, multiracial coalitions and shifted the national political conversation around equity and access.

In his later years, Jackson remained active in public life even while facing serious health challenges, including Parkinson’s disease and progressive supranuclear palsy. He continued to advocate for civil rights, economic justice, and international human rights causes, serving as an elder statesman for generations of activists.

Jackson’s legacy includes not only his public achievements but also the communities he mobilized and the leaders he inspired.
