Jesseca “Judy” Harris-Dupart is clearing the air.
The entrepreneur and reality tv star took to Instagram Wednesday to further explain her and wife Da Brat‘s journey and difficulties in finding a sperm donor after a quote from a recent interview made headlines.
The quote in question is from a sitdown with The Root, where the couple opened up about their pregnancy journey and explained why they had to choose a white donor. They shared that following genetic testing and the already limited amount of Black donors, they were down to just one Black donor.
“And that [dude] looked like Jiminy Cricket,” Brat said. “I was like, “I’m sorry but that wasn’t gonna be my choice.”
In the videos posted to Judy’s Instagram Wednesday, the Kaleidoscope Hair Products founder called out headlines that suggested they purposely chose a white donor. While detailing some of her health concerns, she also shared that Black men make up less the 5% of the donation pool, which significantly reduced their chances of having a Black donor.
“I see all of the headlines. We did an interview with a publication and when we did the interview with the publication, they had access to the first episode. In the first episode of “Brat Loves Judy,” we are in search of Black donors– so a question was asked around that because you saw in real-time us trying to find a Black donor and you saw the difficulties,” Judy said.
She continues, “There are difficulties. There’s a lot of facts in the world that people I feel like really don’t know or are ignorant to and that’s that Black men make up less than 5% of the sperm donation pool. And then even with that, once you put in your genetic testing, you’ll be lucky to find one if any. I’m a carrier of four different things… the severity of the things I’m a carrier of–if we chose somebody that had the same thing, our child would most likely have it.”
And while Brat made a “distasteful joke” about the remaining Black donor available following genetic testing, Judy made it clear that they did not choose their sperm donor based on looks.
